Credibility
What is Credibility
According to Dictionary.com Credibility means the quality of being believed or trusted however when placed in the context of relationships or business to business relationships it is about how one keeps their words and have an action that follow up with their commitments. Furthermore, to be credible means one needs to earn it because credibility determines your influences on others.
You will realise once you gain credibility, people will trust you to help them in times of need or promises you had made with them would be fulfilled. The reason that one becomes credible in other’s eyes is because they set a principle for themselves to follow and not for the sake of seeking approval from others.
Share with us the times you had lost credibility with the people around you
I was the kind of person who seek for approval from people around me therefore it was extremely difficult for me at such as young age even till now to build up my credibility. As my credibility tend to be tainted with mistakes I had made in the past or I had broken promises with the people around me. The worst mistake I had ever done was to talk so much cock and do so little sucking. What I am trying to is that I do not keep the commitments I make for myself and people can see right through me.
An example would be when I was Secondary 1 and I wanted to start a blog shop with my friends however I did nothing of any sort to begin the process of starting a business. I had not even conducted any research nor enquire from my family members on how to start one. This had lost my credibility because all I had done was talking about what being an apparel business and selling what kind of apparels yet I had done nothing to follow up my content.
A recent example of losing credibility was when I had talked about driving my friends to pick up the cartons at her workplace for our projects. I had totally forgotten about the promise I had made and to add on to this my group had faced a temporary problem with getting cartons. These two examples had shown me that I do not think before making promises or actually meaning what I had said.
If I had meant what I said, I would have taken the promises seriously. This also shows that I had lack the ability to understand what are within my limits and what I can do within my limits.
Were there times when you were credible?
Despite the fact that there were times I had lost credibility, I know I had gained credibility as well. I was really enthusiastic about learning Human Resource modules in my Year 2 so I had studied and worked hard for each subject and helped my group members a lot. I would read up on the subject at hand and before every project meeting, I make sure I had understood the criteria the project requires. And how I had worked hard during this period, I had listened and paid attention to all the lectures and did all my tutorials. I had changed my “last minute revision” behaviour to a “consistent revision” kind of behaviour.
With my consistent revision kind of behaviour, I had influenced my peers in following my creative also known as whacky ideas. Such as I had recommended us to present in a Court manner or a television style or film videos to represent our content. Furthermore, my peers would always call me “Spoil Market” for always going and beyond for my projects. The reason why I had gained credibility during this period was because I was doing what I set myself to do consistently like I had set myself a very high standard for I could no longer stand my “Last minute revision” back in Year 1. This had shown me that I should not be aiming to be credible for the sake of influencing others but to aim for a higher standard for myself. In order to set or aim for a higher standard for myself, I need to set out a moral compass for myself.
Importance of Credibility
After comparing both experiences of losing and gaining credibility, I have realised the importance of credibility. This is because after gaining credibility, I had experienced what it was like to be credible among my peers. On the other hand when I had lost my credibility among my peers, I had felt exactly what it was like to not feeling trusted as well as my words taken lightly by my peers because I had lost my credibility.
From this 2 extreme experience, I have finally understood the importance of credibility as it is crucial in forming strong relationships with people around me. I am the kind of person who love being close to people around me and when I lose the connections I had made with them because of my lack of credibility, this had made me feel like a worthless person. I feel like I am unable to help them in their times of need.

Steps Taken to Build Credibility
1. Set a High Standard
I must form up my moral compass aka the high standard I want to follow for myself and not for anyone else. Setting a high standard for myself will allow me to feel like I am worth a billion dollars and I need my actions to back up my feeling of a billion dollars.
2. To be Authentic
To be myself around anyone because people can sift out those who are not acting themselves. It is paramount to be genuine with people as well as expect the same from the people you are authentic with.
3. Find your niche & Build on it
This part I have no right to say to build expertise because I have no expertise as I am only 19 years old I have a lot to learn however these steps are meant for me to learn and no one is entitled to follow these steps.
I have yet to find my niche as I am still searching and trying new things such as learning Spanish and starting this blog on writing. I hope to find my niche and work hard on it so I can build my niche. Credibility is gained when someone has an expertise in a particular field because this shows that you take your work seriously and people respect that. Most importantly, it shows that you respect yourself as well.
4. Admit mistakes made
Always remember to admit mistakes made and even apologise when you are unable to fulfil a promise you had made with someone. This is important because this shows that you are taking responsibility of your limits as well as your mistakes. After apologising, do not just stop there remember to make it up for it as much as you can.
5. Communicate clearly
It is vital to communicate as clearly as possible especially when admitting mistakes or when making promises so that there is not miscommunication as well as both has similar expectations of one another.
